Lot Details

Lot 283
SALE, GEORGE The Koran, Commonly Called The Alocoran of Mohammed.
London: C. Ackers, 1734. First edition. Contemporary calf, gilt decorated spine, gilt lettered spine label, rebacked. 9 3/8 x7 1/2 (23.75 x 19 cm); [2], x, 187, [1], 508, [15] pp., one folding engraved map of Arabia by R. W. Seale, one plate, and three folding plates. Rubbing and wear, corners bumped, joints and hinges starting but sound, hinges reinforced with cloth, contents intermittently spotted and toned, one and a half inch tear to map not effecting image.

The first edition of the first English translation of The Koran directly from the Arabic text, preceded by a lengthy preliminary discourse on the Islamic religion - a landmark in Quranic studies. Sale gives a literary translation of the text, which loses some of the lyricism of the original, but has remained highly praised for its accuracy.
