NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle held a highly successful sale in the popular Fine Art auction category on January 18, 2022. The sale showcased affordable paintings, drawings and prints by prominent artists spanning the late 19th through 20th centuries. Exciting opportunities abound in this popular category for seasoned buyers and new collectors alike!
With competitive bidding, the sale totaled $391,721, more than doubling the high estimate of $110,600-187,300, with an exceptional 93% sold by lot at 100% sold by value.
A Record Collage by Lajos Kassak
Highlighting the sale was a rare 1922 doubled-sided work by Hungarian artist Lajos Kassak (1887-1967) that soared past its estimate of $6,000-9,000 to achieve a stunning $81,900 -- A World Auction Record for a Collage by the Artist. The work featured the mixed media Collage no. 22 on one side and an untitled drawing in pencil on the verso.
Lajos Kassak was best known for his literature and poetry; he was an outspoken intellectual leader opposed to the growing forces of fascism in Hungary, even being forced to flee to Vienna for a time. Involved in many of the major avant-garde art movements of the early 20th century, Kassak’s work extended into the Futurist movement as well as Dada and Constructivism. Though he was forced to cease creating art in his native Hungary for several decades, Kassak remained well-known throughout Europe, with this collage appearing in the landmark 1966 DADA retrospective held at the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris.
Also performing strongly were three paintings by the Polish/American artist Isaac (Itshak) Jack Holtz (1925-2018) all of which sold for many times their respective estimates.
