NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle's auction on May 24, 2022 saw strong prices for Old Master & 19th Century Paintings & Drawings spanning the Italian Renaissance through the early 19th century. The sale showcased a wide range of landscapes, still lifes, portraits and religious subjects.
Highlighting the Old Masters was a 15th/16th century Flemish school portrait of a soldier that soared over its $3,000-5,000 estimate amid trans-Atlantic competition to achieve a stunning $81,900. The work was once thought to be a portrait of the Spanish General Gonzalo de Cordova (1453-1515), who conquered Naples for the crown of Spain, and it bore a plaque to that effect. The portrait has a distinguished provenance, having descended in the collection of the Earls of Amherst.
Offered with Old Master & 19th Century Paintings & Drawings were English & Continental Silver including the Daniel & Joanna S. Rose Collection on May 24 (Read More) and English & Continental Furniture & Decorative Arts on May 25 (Read More). With competitive international bidding, the Old Masters surpassed expectations reflecting continued strength in the art market, and the total over the May 24-25 sales topped $1.8 million!
