This painting is closely related to a portrait of the sitter's mother, Elizabeth, Lady Pelham (ca. 1664-1681), also attributed to the studio of Sir Godfrey Kneller, now hanging in the Red Saloon at Raynham Hall, the Townshend family seat in Norfolk.
