[WIENER WERKSTÄTTE] BARON, FELICIAN; HOFFMAN, JOSEPH; MOSER, KOLOMAN; ROLLER, ALFRED. Die Fläche. Entwürf für decorative Malerei, Placate [etc.].
Vienna: Schroll u. Co., [1903-4]. White paper over boards, Curwen endpapers. 12 1/8 x 8 1/4 inches (31 x 21 cm); a complete one-year run (a second volume was not printed until 1910) with cover/title page by Forstner, text leaf, and twelve 16-page fascicules of color-printed designs by the artists of the Werkstätte sequentially paginated to 192 pp. Some toning to the inexpensive paper, minor staining to the margins of a few leaves, some finger soiling, a few small edge defects (and a few leaves just starting to separate at the gutter margin), pp. 141-2 bound out of order, plate 140 with some mostly marginal pencil marks, but in all a very good, complete set of this extraordinary graphic document.

Die Fläche (The Surface) was the design magazine of the Wiener Werkstätte, which was established in 1903. The cover by Forstner articulates the scope of the publication: "Designs for decorative painting, posters, book and printing equipment, preprinted, envelope, menu and business cards, illustrations, wallpapers, black and white art, textile, weaving and printing, stencils, lead glazings, intarsia, embroidery, monograms, dress jewelry..." The twelve fascicules contain a total of 192 illustrated pages, each with one or more color illustrations. The works reproduced are by many of the Viennese masters, including Exler, Klimt, Moser, Krenek, Roller, Schufinsky and many others. A second (and final) volume did not appear for another six years.
