TOLKIEN, J. R[OLAND]. R.[EUEL] The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
Comprising The Fellowship of the Ring; The Two Towers; The Return of the King. London: George Allen and Unwin, 1954-1954-1955. First editions, first printings of the text volumes, with the required issue point of the signature mark "4" on page 49 of Return of the King, with the sagging type on the page (this was previously considered the first issue point by Hammond, but there is now some debate on this score); the dust jacket of The Fellowship of the Ring in the first state; the jacket of The Return of the King in the second state, with the Manchester Guardian review for the first volume of the trilogy on the rear flap. Three volumes, publisher's red cloth in dust jackets. 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches (22.5 x 14 cm); 424 pp., map; 352 pp., map; 416 pp., map. The spines of the jackets tanned, a few small tears and losses to the jacket of the first volume; the cloth at the head and foot of the spine of The Two Towers a trifle bumped, but the cloth of each of the volumes quite bright overall. Minor offsetting to the endpapers of the first volume.
An attractive set of The Lord of the Rings, one of 3,000 possible sets (the books were limited to 3,000, 3,250 and 7,000 respectively).
