Comprising 26 titles, all first or early English and French editions, each bound in publisher's cloth gilt. Generally sound copies that are clean within, the bindings rubbed at places, see below for condition on specific titles, sold as a collection and not subject to return, contact department for further information. DARWIN, CHARLES. On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, of the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. London: John Murray, 1860. Second edition, fifth thousand. Publisher's green cloth, gilt. 7 7/8 x 4 7/8 inches (20 x 12.5 cm); x, 502 pp., with 32 pp. ads at rear. Soiling and wear, corners bumped, spine lean, short tears to cloth at head and tail of spine, front joint cracked, hinges cracked, nonetheless the boards are sound, overopened at p. 313, bookplate of H. Gueneau de Mussy, M.D.
The second edition of Darwin's landmark work, where he first outlined his theory of evolution. This edition contains most of the original text of the first edition, but with a few authorial corrections. The most notable change was the modification of the controversial whale-bear anecdote - an effort to silence critics who had seized upon the passage and used it to ridicule Darwin and theory. Publisher's printed paper wrappers. lix, 614 pp., [1 p. errata]. Creasing, soiling and wear to wrapper, spine toned with vertical splits and an old repair, contents with occasional pale spots, old ownership inscription on front wrapper.

Light soiling and wear, extremities rubbed, spine ends and corners softened, hinges cracked but sound, vol. I overopened, ownership inscription of John Errington de la Croix.

Light rubbing and wear, spine ends softened, corners bumped, pale spotting to cloth, two creases to cloth at spine, contents generally clean with a bit of spotting at front and rear, bookseller stamp, ownership signature of John Errington de la Croix.
