Additional Notes & Condition Report

It is difficult to detect restorations under UV light through the old varnish layer but one can clearly see a strengthening of the shadows surrounding the subject's cravat. There is an area of restoration at the sitter's left breast (viewer's right). Craquelure. There are a few scratchs with losses in the lower left. Glue relined.

Two Newman Gallery labels affixed to the frame identify the sitter as Alexander Henry. A third hand-written label affixed to the frame is inscribed: Painted by Lawrence / at the same time ... father / Bayard's picture was painted

Family history holds that the painting was possibly done by Rembrandt Peale.
