NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle's auction of Post-War & Contemporary Art on October 27, 2021 saw strong prices for important paintings and sculpture by some of the 20th and 21st centuries' most prominent artists. Encompassing works by American, European and Asian artists, the sale will spanned artistic movements from Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art and Minimalism, moving through Fluxus and Mail Art to Street Art and works by emerging artists. The sale also featured a special section devoted to works by Latin American artists of the 20th century.

With competitive international bidding, the sale totaled a robust $1,535,761 against a pre-sale estimate of $1,041,400-1,700,100 with a strong 92% sold by lot and 100% sold by value.

Louise Nevelson

Highlighting the sale were two works by Louise Nevelson (1899-1988). A large-scale three-dimensional assemblage, Wall Zag achieved $245,700, and Moon Gardenscape XII from 1976 realized $119,700. These monochromatic abstractions employing the artist’s iconic wood elements and black spray paint are emblematic of Nevelson’s bold, geometric form and motion.

Margaret Kilgallen

Featured in Margaret Kilgallen’s 1999 solo exhibition at Deitch Projects, Untitled (Sure) is in two parts, stitched together, a practice the artist learned while studying book binding techniques. Kilgallen’s flattened forms – both the female figure and lettering above, are borne of the artist’s love of Outsider Art, graphic design and traditional sign painting. Determined bidders drove the work to a stunning $126,000, many times its $20,000-40,000 estimate.

World Auction Records

Sylvia Mangold’s (b. 1938) Study for Opposite Corner from 1973 realized $69,300 – A World Auction Record for a Work on Paper by the Artist.

Betty Goodwin’s (Canadian, 1923-2008) Pieces of Time from 1996 achieved $40,950 – A World Auction Record for the Artist.

Joseph Raffael’s (b. 1933) Passageway from 2003 sold for $34,650 – A World Auction Record for a Work on Paper by the Artist.
