NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle's auction of Photographs on November 17, 2021 showcased a wide range of fine examples spanning the history of the genre, from early photography, such as travel albums and daguerreotypes, to fine art photography and photographic literature.

Highlighting the sale was a rare and important album of 101 images of Japan, circa 1869, by Felice Beato (1825-1908) that achieved a stunning $176,400 amid international competition and set a World Auction Record for Beato’s images of Japan. This major 19th century photographically illustrated album, Photographic Views of Japan with Historical and Descriptive Notes, was one of the most extensive versions of the work known. It was the third highest price ever paid for a collection of Beato’s images, exceeded only by a suite of his views of China and an album of Lucknow, India.
