Lot Details

Lot 148
[ASIA-HUNTING] STUART, A.G. Shikar Work. Vol II [...III].
Mandalay, Burma: August 8, 1898 and Rangoon, Burma: 1901. Two manuscript volumes, titled on the front free endpaper as above, one recased with marbled sides, the other in period orange morocco, recased. The first 8 x 5 1/2 inches (20 x 14 cm); the second 7 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches (18.5 x 16.5 cm); each approximately 100 pp. of legible script in black ink, pencil etc. with many fine photographs of trophies, kills and Stuart's bearers; occasional sketch maps and drawings of stalks. Some wear, new spines (also corners on volume II).
A remarkably interesting pair of volumes documenting the hunting activities of A. G. Stuart, an officer of the Royal Scots (the Lothian Regiment), around the turn of the century. On shikar in both Burma and India, Stuart bagged trophy tigers, elephants, and a variety of deer and small game, often photographing his bag. The first volume includes a couple of portraits of Maung Miyat Tha, apparently a trusted native shikari, with his rifle. The information in these pages ranges from the practical (the names of taxidermists, names of friends and fellow officers etc.) to highly detailed accounts of hunts. Jake Johnson seems to have owned these two volumes only, based on his library record; volume I was the "one that got away." Stilll, these two are quite exceptional, and each is complete in itself.
