New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1895. First edition, first issue on laid paper. Publisher's original tan cloth stamped in red, black and gilt, the top edge stained yellow, housed in a morocco backed slipcase. 7 3/4 x 4 1/4 inches; 233, 4 pp. ads starting with "Gilbert Parker's Best Books", the type not broken on last line of p. 225. The cloth somewhat thumbsoiled and with small stains and spotting to edges, a touch of faint dampstaining to endpapers and a short closed tear to the front free endpaper, a few chips to roughly opened ads, early ink signature to a front blank, the Jean Hersholt copy with his bookplate and shelf marker.

First issue of Crane's Civil War classic, a highspot of 19th century American literature, from the distinguished library of Jean Hersholt, actor and president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 1945-1949. This copy sold as part of Hersholt's substantial collection at Parke-Bernet, 23-24 March 1954, lot 333.
