Said to have been purchased in Rome in 1848 by Colonel Carr, an American diplomat to Italy
Acquired in 1849 by Judge William Pinckney Maulsby (1815-1894) of Maryland
By descent in the Maulsby family to the present owner
This painting is related to a verson of the same subject by Annibale Carracci now in the collection of the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts.
