Note:
The sitter in this portrait has been traditionally identified as Adelaide Victoire Noyel de Bellegarde, known as Adele de Bellegarde (1772-1830). She was released after the fall of Robespierre, and thereafter enjoyed an active social life among the Parisian intelligentsia. In this milieu she met the painter Jacques-Louis David, who chose her as the model for one of the Sabine Women in the foreground of his 1799 painting Les Sabines, now in the Louvre.
