NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle will auction an important Roman marble figure of Aphrodite on Wednesday, October 13, 2021 at 10am. Property from the Estate of Fashion Designer Herbert Kasper, the figure will highlight the auction of English & Continental Furniture & Decorative Arts.
This superb marble sculpture represents one of the great archetypes of Classical antiquity: Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty. One of the goddess’s best known depictions in the ancient world was Aphrodite of the Gardens, a marble figure created in the 5th century BC by the sculptor Alkamenes for the goddess’s temple at Athens. Measuring 42.25 inches (107 cm) in height, the sculpture presented here is a Roman copy of that famous work dating to the 1st century AD.
Aphrodite of the Gardens is a splendid example of the refined stage of Greek classicism known as the “rich style,” which is noted for the elegance and visual drama of its sensuous curves and profuse linear detail. It offers serious collectors of antiquities an opportunity to consider a work of exquisite quality and rarity.
The public is invited to the exhibition on view October 9 - 11. Private viewings are available by appointment. Please email [email protected]
