NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle held a successful auction of Old Master & 19th Century Paintings & Drawings on May 19, 2021. The sale offered a wide range of works including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and religious subjects by European artists from the Renaissance through the 19th century.
With international competitive bidding, the sale totaled $506,898, within the pre-sale estimate of $356,800-628,200, with a strong 84% sold by lot and 100% sold by value.
The top lot was a Venetian scene by Ippolito Caffi (1809-1866) that realized $44,100. Caffi is regarded as the father of 19th century Italian cityscape painting, and this sunlit view from 1857 of the Grand Canal in Venice shows his work at its sparkling best.
A curious 18th century painting of dwarfs slicing a large block of cheese by Italian artist Enrico Albrici (1714-1775) captured bidders' imagination and drove competition on the work to $31,500, well over its $10,000-20,000 estimate. Property from the Collection of Ambassador and Mrs. Alfred Hoffman of North Palm Beach, Florida, the painting was one of two examples by Albrici depicting dwarfs in the sale.
