This painting relates to a composition by Albani now in the Musee du Louvre in Paris. It was originally conceived as the first episode in a cycle of four paintings depicting the myth of Venus commissioned by Ferdinando Gonzaga in 1621 for his Villa Favorita near Mantua. After Ferdinando's death, the paintings were purchased by the Medici family and removed to Florence. .

Additional Notes & Condition Report

Glue relined. Mended hole roughly 1 inch in diameter in the foliage above the head of the lady in yellow to the left of Venus. Scattered restoration around the edges. Some contours and shadows reinforced.
