This painting relates to a composition by Albani now in the Musee du Louvre in Paris. It was originally conceived as the first episode in a cycle of four paintings depicting the myth of Venus commissioned by Ferdinando Gonzaga in 1621 for his Villa Favorita near Mantua. After Ferdinando's death, the paintings were purchased by the Medici family and removed to Florence. .
