NEW YORK, NY -- On January 21, 2021, Doyle presented a successful auction of English & Continental Furniture, Silver & Decorative Arts. The wide range of offerings included elegant English and Continental furniture, Georgian silver, porcelain, mirrors, clocks, chandeliers and fine rugs from prominent collections and distinguished estates.
With competitive international bidding, the sale totaled $473,603 at the high end of the estimate of $319,500-486,700 with a strong $88% sold by lot and an exceptional 100% sold by value.
The top lot of the sale was a group of three Limoges enamel calendar plates depicting the months of July, August and September. Measuring 7 1/2 inches in diameter, the plates achieved $15,120, tripling their $4,000-6,000 estimate.
An English mahogany and parcel-gilt print-mounted four-panel screen decorated with mostly 18th century views of London soared past its estimate of $1,200-1,800 to achieve $10,710. The screen highlighted the Property of a Private Collector, London, Fifth Avenue and Southampton, New York.
Jean-François Leleu apprenticed in the workshop of the Royal ébéniste Jean-François Oeben (1721-1763). His plans to marry Oeben's widow were thwarted by his fellow apprentice, Jean-Henri Riesener, so he left the Oeben workshop and was appointed maître in 1764. His clients included members of the aristocracy, most importantly the Prince de Condé who ordered furniture for the Palais Bourbon between 1772 and 1776. A Louis XVI ormolu-mounted mahogany console stamped by Leleu sold for $6,930, surpassing its $3,000-5,000 estimate. It is a fine example of the burgeoning taste for neoclassical design, 'goût grec' of which Leleu was a strong advocate.
All prices include the Buyer's Premium.
