[MOUNTAINEERING] FRESHFIELD, DOUGLAS W. The Exploration of the Caucasus
. London: Edward Arnold, 1896. First edition, one of 100 large-paper copies, this copy 93. Two volumes, publisher's half-vellum over salmon cloth, top edge gilt. 12 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches (31 x 23.5 cm); (2), xxiv, 278 pp.; x, 290 pp.; with four maps (one set into the rear cover of the second volume), three folding photographic panoramas and 76 superb photogravure plates, printed on tissue on card mounts, mainly by Vittoria Sella, and numerous photographic illustrations in text. Boards a bit soiled with some wear, splits to the heads of both volumes (with attempted repairs with scotch tape), internally generally clean.
A magnificent work, quite rare in this superior large-paper edition, noteworthy for the wonderful plates by the photographer-mountaineer Sella (who also contributed to the Duke of the Abruzzi's mountaineering works). Freshfield was a pioneering mountaineer, who had been the president of the Alpine Club and was an early Himalayan climber, producing an important book based on his circumnavigation of Kangchenjunga in 1903. This is the first comprehensive work on climbing in the Caucasus, including Mt. Elbrus 18,510' (5,642 m). Neate F64.
