London: John Francis and Charles Rivington, 1784. Fourth edition, two parts bound in one. Contemporary speckled calf, the spine gilt ruled and with raised bands and a red morocco lettering label. 7 1/4 x 4 1/2 inches (18.5 x 12 cm); lxxxii, 268, xxxiv, 111, [11] pp.; 16 engraved plates (including frontispiece and an engraved view on thicker stock at front) and numerous in-text illustrations. Minor foxing, ink signature of Richard Poole to title and blank, a few chips and small losses to binding and the upper joint starting, in all a fine copy.
A well-illustrated and annotated edition with large additions by Sir John Hawkins (1719-1789), one of Samuel Johnson's closest friends, in an attractive contemporary binding.
