. London: Printed by Henry Baldwin, for Charles Dilly, 1785. First edition (second state with leaves E3, E4 and M4 being cancels, and the 'preparing for press' line appearing below the errata). Contemporary calf boards, rebacked in modern leather to style, the original endpapers preserved, slipcase. 8 1/4 x 5 inches (21 x 12 cm); 524 [1] pp., with half-title and errata. The text clean, some toning to endleaves, strengthening to hinges, a few nicks to spine; Together with JOHNSON, SAMUEL. The Lives of the most eminent English poets; with Critical Observations on their Works. London: C. Bathurst, J. Buckland, W. Strahan, J. Rivington and Sons, T. Davies [etc.], 1781. Four volumes, old calf (rebacked), all edges marbled. 8 3/8 x 5 inches (21 x 13 cm); various paginations, with The principal additions and corrections in the Third Edition.... bound in at the rear of the last volume (this published in 1783), preceded by the advertisement leaf (p. 505). Rebacked as noted, the spines now dry and somewhat defective with losses. Minor foxing here and there..
