SENECA, LUCIUS ANNAEUS Philosophi Opera quae exstant omnia a Justo Lipsio emendata et Scholiis illustrata.
Antwerp: Ex Officina Plantiniana Balthasaris Moreti, 1632. Full tan morocco with the arms of Louis XIII (Olivier fer 4), covers with a seme of alternating crowned "L's" (fer 8, also noted on a Plantin work by Olivier) and fleurs de lis, spine richly gilt to match, all edge gilt, housed in a slipcase. 15 1/8 x 10 inches (39 x 25.5 cm); [10, of 16] xxxvi, 893, [5] pp. The binding considerably rubbed, with losses to some of the gilding, the lower edges of the boards rubbed, the joints starting at head and foot, but overall still fairly robust. Some toning to the paper (as usual), lacking three leaves from the first quire, sold as a binding, not subject to return. Bookplate of Charles Lyddell Esq..
A very attractive royal binding, the front flyleaf with an autograph inscription of June 7, 1635 by the Jesuit writer Louis Cellot (signed Ludovicus Cellotius) addressed to Louis XIII, with the seal of the Holy College.
