[MEDICINE] LANGHAM, WILLIAM. The garden of health: containing the sundry rare and hidden vertues and properties of all kindes of simples and plants. Together with the manner how they are to bee vsed and applyed in medicine for the health of mans body, against diuers diseases and infirmities most common amongst men. Gathered by the long experience and industry of William Langham, practitioner in physicke.
London: Thomas Harper, 1633. Second edition, stated. Period panelled calf with the monogram "IA" in blind. alled edges speckled red. 7 1/8 x 5 inches (18 x 13.5 cm); [8], 702, [66] pp.; [par]^[4] A-3B^[8]. Binding worn, rebacked; toned throughout, slight staining at rear. Two or three clean tears into text; a well-thumbed but overall respectable copy. Ownership inscription John Allason of Godfrid, 1576, and apparently bound for him. Annotations and marginalia in various hands throughout.
First published in 1597, this interesting English Hortus discusses the medicinal qualities of a wide variety of foods and herbs, and other substances. as is typical of such works, this copy saw much use, but retains its interesting monogrammed binding, presumably made for the John Allason who entered his name in this copy.
