BOSWELL, JAMES The Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides, with Samuel Johnson, LL.D.
. London: Printed by Henry Baldwin, for Charles Dilly, 1785. First edition (second state with leaves E3, E4 and M4 being cancels, and the 'preparing for press' line appearing below the errata). Contemporary marbled boards, rebacked with modern leather. 8 1/4 x 5 inches (21 x 12 cm); 524 [1-errata] pp., with folding map. Repaired tear to errata leaf affecting the manuscript on verso (see note), some spotting to map, some neat marginalia, the boards rubbed, offset to title from the booklabel of William Safire.
On the verso of the errata here is a full page note by a contemporary of Boswell regarding Dr. Johnson's accuracy in pronunciations of dialects: "I had the honor to be introduced to Dr. Johnson by Mr. Boswell himself; & in my ear, his pronunciation was clearly not Southern..." Wordsmith Safire took note of this and a NY Times post-it note on the front pastedown indicates this leaf of text.
C From the Collection of the late William Safire
