Lot 1026
LINCOLN, ABRAHAM Commission signed.
Washington: 7 August 1861. Engraved document on accomplished in manuscript and signed "Abraham Lincoln" as President, countersigned by Simon Cameron as Secretary of War, with two large engraved vignettes, green wafer seal, and ink docketting at upper left. 16 1/2 x 13 inches; nicely matted and framed. Usual folds, not apparently laid-down but not removed from frame, the text ink somewhat weak but the Lincoln signature large and dark.
A fine example of a Lincoln signed appointment in the build-up of the Army at the beginning of the Civil War. Lincoln here appoints Benjamin Rush Cowen as Additional Paymaster, a capacity in which he would serve in Washington, Virginia, and similarly in the Department of the Gulf before being promoted to Adjutant-General and Brevet Brigadier-General by War's end.
C From the Collection of the late William Safire
