Original Works and Editions by Established Artists and Key Emerging Artists
NEW YORK, NY – Collecting Post-War and Contemporary art has never been easier and more convenient! The DoyleNext: Contemporary Collector timed auction closing on Tuesday, August 11 beginning at 10am offers a broad selection of originals and editions by established figures and key emerging artists.
Possibly best known for his 2017 presidential portrait of Barack Obama, the Los Angeles-based Kehinde Wiley creates stoic, regal portraiture, often with intricate, lushly colored backgrounds. A rare sculptural edition, St. Francis of Adelaide showcases Wiley’s gift for presenting his subjects in a noble, stately manner, seen here updating the classic marble bust for the current day (est. $1,500-2,500).
In a career spanning over seven decades, Icelandic artist Erro has created countless works that combine Pop with Surrealism, comic book heroes with political icons, and humor with tragedy. From 1958, Garbage Face is an early collage of Dadaist anthropomorphic machine faces (est. $1,2000-1,800).
Stay High 149
Pioneering NYC graffiti legend Stay High 149 is represented in the sale with three works on canvas (est. each $1,000-1,500). Stay High tagged hundreds of subway trains throughout the 1970s, and his iconic “smoker” character – adapted from the classic British TV spy drama The Saint – became a fixture in graffiti history.
Los Angeles-based painter Kim McCarty uses a “wet-on-wet” painting technique, applying watercolor to a dampened sheet of paper. From 2011, Portrait of a Boy is a prime example of her ethereal, expressive portraiture (est. $600-800).
An assortment of editions are featured in the sale, highlighted by the rare bound print collection Your House Is Mine, released by Bullet Space in the late 80s. An arts space focusing on the community and culture of the Lower East Side, Bullet Space created this limited bound collection of editions and writing. Among the artists featured in the book are Lee Quinones, Lady Pink, Anton Van Dalen, Martin Wong, David Wojnarowicz, John Fekner and more (est. $600-800).
Other notable offerings include an 1997 work on paper by enigmatic artist Marcel Dzama, as well as editions and multiples by such blue chip artists as Ai Weiwei, Giorgio Cattelan, James Rosenquist and April Gornik.
