Lot 8
BRADY, MATHEW (1823-1896) [General George Armstrong Custer,
January 3, 1865]. Albumen print, likely a proof of the carte-de-visite, unmounted. Full sheet 4 x 3 inches (100 x 70 mm); framed. Fine with very rich and dark tones, early pencil notation to verso naming Custer.
There is a thin portion of a darker toned printing visible at the head of the image, this residual portion noticeably with a slightly different cropping (the crossbar of Custer's chair is almost entirely visible, whereas it is slightly occluded in the main image). Clearly, at least one other version was printed on the same sheet of printing-out paper before it was trimmed away. Additionally, the present image appears to show some form of dodging on the extreme left. Taken alkl-in-all, our example has all the appearance of a working proof of this important Custer image. It was never mounted.
Property from an International Corporation.
