[PHOTOGRAPHER UNKNOWN] President Ulysses S. Grant without Side Whiskers,
circa 1870s. Albumen print with oval vignette on card mount, vignette 7 3/4 x 5 3/8 inches (184 x 135 mm) on larger sheet, the verso with an old pencilled note "This was given me in the Government photograph gallery in Washington DC as the only one of this proof, yours John Elbert Wilkie" with an appended note in another hand "John E. Wilkie was at the time Chief of the U.S. Secret Service." Mount very worn, one corner chipped away with the loss of one corner of the blank border of the albumen print. The portrait itself with excellent tones. Framed..
An interesting image of Grant without his chin beard etc. According to earlier cataloguing he was persuaded by his wife to remove the beard for an artist, as she felt it would ruin his silhouette.
Property from an International Corporation.
