Lot Details

Lot 24
GUTEKUNST, FREDERICK (1831-1917) Ulysses S. Grant, Lieutenant-General, U.S.A.,
1865, likely printed 1865-1870. Imperial albumen print, 17 3/4 x 14 7/8 inches (450 x 378 mm), on original printed card mount, with Gutekunst's imprint directly below the image, and the "fine "Photographs from F. Gutekunst's Imperial Galleries" label on the rear, with the notation "For O. W. Holmes Esq. with compliments of the artist" in pencil. The image with excellent tones, some scattered foxing to the plain background at the right of the image, some soiling, the mount rather soiled and apparently cleaned.
Very rare in this large size, this is the classic portrait of Grant, one hand to his chest. Given the "Esq." against Holmes' name, the recipient was likely Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. the jurist, rather than his father, the great physician and author.
Property from an International Corporation.

Estimate: $1,200 - $1,800
Sold for $2,625 (includes buyer's premium)
