GARDNER, ALEXANDER [attrib.] (1821-1882) [Union Civilians on Pontoon Bridge]
circa 1864. Unmounted albumen print, image 6 1/2 x 9 inches (168 x 230 mm). Surface of image rather creased, three small restorations (probably to edge tears) on the verso, which bears a pencil notation "F.H. Meserve Collection" (i.e. the great Civil War collection of Frederick Meserve) "Gardner" (in another hand) and a few other notations. Framed.
Fashionably dressed civilians, including a number of women, are shown in this interesting image. A party in a carriage is shown in the foreground.
