FOWX, EGBERT GUY [attrib.] (1821-1889) [Gen. U.S. Grant at his City Point, Va., headquarters,
1864. Albumen print on an early card mount, image printed as an oval on sheet 6 1/8 x 8 3/8 inches (156 x 212 mm), old pencil notations on card mount recto. Image with good tones, some minor abrasions visible under raking light, in all an attractive example of the image, with some soiling to the mount. Framed.
From June of 1864 through April of 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant was encamped at City Point while he directed the siege of Petersburg, and Fowx produced several images of him there. It looks like an idyllic retreat in this image, but in fact it was the supply and command hub for a hundred thousand troops, closer to a small city.
Property from an International Corporation.
