K. C. A. J. [=FOSTER, JACK BURTON] The Sportsman's Vade-Mecum for the Himalayas: containing notes on shooting, outfit, camp equipment, sporting yarns, etc.
London: Horace Cox, 1891. First edition. Publisher's pictorial cloth, endpapers printed with advertisements. 8 3/8 x 5 1/2 inches; [vi], 120, 28 pp.; frontispiece, in-text illustrations, half-title, publisher's advertisements. Extremities a bit worn, cloth toned, somewhat overopened, scattered foxing.
"The first half of this excellent work details the equipment needed for sporting excursions including choice of firearms, cartridge boxes, tools, tents, clothing, and the like. There is even advice concerning the wearing of 'colored spectacles' when entering the snow country. The second half dwells on the author's experiences hunting blackbuck, urial, markhor, ibex, and other game, though there is little mention of actual hunting venues. He particularly enjoyed stalking markhor, which he considered the 'monarch of the Himalayas'" (Czech). Czech, Asia, p. 115.
