Affordable Paintings, Prints & Multiples by Established and emerging Artists
NEW YORK, NY -- Following the continued success of new category Fine Modern Art, Doyle held its most recent auction on Tuesday, December 15, 2020. Showcasing paintings, drawings, sculpture and fine prints with moderate estimates, this popular category generated excitement among seasoned collectors and new buyers alike. The sale presented a wide spectrum of works from various artistic movements and regions of the globe, spanning over one hundred years of creative activity.
Highlights of the sale included a painted steel sculpture entitled Small Red Deer, 2002, by American artist Wendy Klemperer, which far exceeded its estimate of $400-600, achieving $8,125 -- A World Auction Record for the Artist.
Produced during the artist’s time in Eureka, CA before arriving to New York’s Lower East Side, an original drawing by Martin Wong (American, 1946-1999) entitled Vance Hotel that was later reproduced in his late 70s portfolio “Eureka Sketchbook” fetched $12,500 -- tripling its estimate of $2,000-4,000. Wong depicted the Vance Hotel in many works of this era; the Italianate style hotel, built circa 1872, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Jardin des Tulips, 1997, by French artist Roger Muhl (1929-2008) also found favor at the auction, fetching $22,500, surpassing its estimate of $7,000-9,000.
Among the artists featured in the sale were Fikret Moualla, Friedel Dzubas, Fairfield Porter, Tadashi Asoma, Angel Botello, Jacques Lipchitz, James Suzuki and Wolf Kahn.
