O. HENRY [=PORTER, WILLIAM SYDNEY] Autograph manuscript signed of Art and the Broncho.
[sic]. Likely New York: circa 1909. Full red morocco, marbled endpapers. 10 1/4 x 8 3/8 inches (26 x 21.5 cm); 29 ff. mounted on guards, complete autograph fair copy (likely intended for the printer) written one side of the sheet only in pencil, approximately 3,900 words, with the author's autograph signature on the first page: "By Sydney Porter." This has been crossed off in pencil, and "Olivier Henry" has been written by the author below it, an uncommon form of the author's autograph. Several small ink corrections, mostly punctuation, likely also in the author's hand. Some wear to joints, all sheets with a central fold from envelope insertion, several neat repairs, the central fold of the first sheet silked, minor soiling. From the collection of Frank Hogan, with his book label, sold in his 1945 Parke-Bernet sale.
This Texas story of a cowpuncher turned artist appeared in the volume of O. Henry's complete works entitled Roads of Destiny, 1909, pp. 86-101, appearing there with several small emendations, noted in the documentation bound-in before the manuscript. Full O. Henry manuscripts are distinctly scarce; the last we note, five leaves, sold in 2015.
