KIPLING, RUDYARD and ALICE Echoes. By Two Writers.
Lahore: "The "Civil and Military Gazette" Press, (from wrappers). First edition. Original printed wrappers in green leather slipcase and chemise. 6 x 4 1/2 inches (15 x 11.5 cm); ff., 72 pp. Wrappers neatly rebacked, somewhat soiled, losses by dogearing to lower fore-corners, old notes in ink in a child's hand (a series of Roman numerals) on the front free endpaper, generally clean internally. John Pierpont Morgan's copy, with his book-label in the chemise (discreet deaccession notes below).
First edition of Kipling's very rare second book; the "two writers" of the title were Kipling and his sister Alice ("Trix"). Of the 39 poems, mostly "echoes" or imitations of well-known poets, 32 are ascribed to Kipling and 7 to his sister. We note no copies at auction since 1999. Livingston 14; Stewart 5.
