A letter from Joseph Gott (1786-1860) to his daughter in Rome dated September 16, 1839, mentions the plaster model of this sculpture: ' ... see that the plaster Model of Mrs. Dames's little girl embracing a Maltese dog is put into the farthest room ... & locked up for no one to enter for I have to work at the Dog before it is seen & if it remains in the front room where it is Capt. Franks when he comes to Rome may see it & write a bad account of it to Col. Dames, be sure you attend to this as Capt. Franks may arrive before me ...'.

losses/restorations: there is obvious evidence of previous professional restoration to this marble group, including to prominent losses to many of the curled tip ends of the girl's hair, now discolored an apricot color, in the front, sides and at the back of the head; similar restoration to losses of the tip ends on the dog's fur, including its right ear, body and tail; old restoration/discoloration to the toes on both of the girl's feet, including both big toes and one other toe; there is a more recent chip loss to the area of the dog's bangs, above its right eye; there are rim chips and losses to the marble, notably, to the bottom rim edge around the base; there are chip losses to the tip end area of the dog's tail; etc.; not blacklighted
