A letter from Joseph Gott (1786-1860) to his daughter in Rome dated September 16, 1839, mentions the plaster model of this sculpture: ' ... see that the plaster Model of Mrs. Dames's little girl embracing a Maltese dog is put into the farthest room ... & locked up for no one to enter for I have to work at the Dog before it is seen & if it remains in the front room where it is Capt. Franks when he comes to Rome may see it & write a bad account of it to Col. Dames, be sure you attend to this as Capt. Franks may arrive before me ...'.
