George II Provincial Sterling Silver Punch Bowl
John Langlands, Newcastle, 1757
Circular with shaped bowl raised on ring foot, the body later engraved with heraldic arms of Haig. Diameter 10 inches (25.4 cm), approximately 28 ounces.
The arms are those of the Earl of Haig as borne by Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig, Viscount Dawick and Baron Haig of Bermersyde (1861-1928). Haig was commander of British forces during the First World War and presided over some of the war's great battles among them the Battles of the Somme, Arras and Ypres. On his death a day of national mourning was proclaimed to pay homage to the great general.
