[ALASKA] SUMNER, CHARLES. Speech of Hon. Charles Sumner, of Massachusetts, on the Cession of Russian America to the United States.
Washington: Congressional Globe Office, 1867. First edition retaining the map. Original printed wrappers. 9 x 6 inches (23 x 15 cm); 48 pp., with the large folding lithographed map North Western America Showing the Territory Ceded by Russia to the United States, stated "Second Edition, May 1867", the map opening to 24 x 36 inches (60 x 91 cm). The upper wrapper detached and with small losses, toning and spotting to title and a few spots within, the rear wrapper with small stain, the map also detached and with a short tear into image where originally mounted, a few splits at fold points.
An important speech from Charles Sumner urging for the purchase of "Russian America." The map, frequently lacking, was the first to name Alaska across the territory. Howes S-1134; Lada-Mocarski 159; Phillips Alaska Maps, p. 67; Wagner-Camp 163.
