"Now run along, and don't get into any mischief. I am going out" is what Mrs. Rabbit says to her son Peter as she buttons his coat in the opening pages of The Tale of Peter Rabbit and present here is recreation of that published drawing. Contemporary watercolors and drawings depicting the characters from Potter's most beloved book are rare and infrequent at auction. The present example was sold in 1987 and is distinct from a group of later drawings prepared in 1927 to raise money for the National Trust.
