STIEGLITZ, ALFRED (1864-1946) [Portrait of Marie Rapp at 291],
1941. Platinum print, 9 3/4 x 7 7/8 inches (248 x 197 mm), unsigned and unstamped, but with an associated slip of card with a pencil inscription reading "Give one of these to your mother. The others are yours," initialled by Stieglitz, the verso of this slip with typed credit, title and date. Framed.
Rapp was Alfred Stieglitz's secretary at his 291 Gallery, and a lifelong friend. She not only helped run the gallery but assisted with the publication of Camera Work. He photographed her many times. A close friend and confidante, she was an excellent subject, her natural grace and beauty resulting in a touching image. Rapp later married George K. Boursault, who was a member of the Photo-Secession.
