BLUE BILL HEN DECOY Carved and painted decoy of likely a Blue Bill hen.
Length 14 inches. With screw-on, teardrop ballast weight stamped "The D. C. Sanford Co. / Bridgeport, CT." Metal number 13 affixed to tail. Flaking, loss to bottom of bill, a few nicks and holes, anchor and keel weight present, likely original head and paint, glass eyes, sold as is, third-party shipping required.
The ballast weight with a "D. C. Sanford Co." stamp may indicate a Wildfowler Decoy (Saybrook) make (see Cowan and LaFountain, "Wildfowler Decoys," Decoy Magazine, Jan./Feb. 2001).
