NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle is honored to auction an important and rare jewelry collection from the Estate of animal rights advocate Mary Max as a featured section of the Important Jewelry auction on December 13, 2019 at 10am. Born in Buffalo, New York, the former Mary Balkin (1966-2019) was educated at Nardin Academy and Boston College. Inspired by a conversation with actress Isabella Rosellini about factory farming, Mary dedicated herself to the animal rights movement. She was a member of the Board of Directors of the Humane Society of the United States; a founding member of the Board of New York Coalition for Healthy School Food, which introduces plant-based foods and nutrition education in schools; and a member of the advisory council of Farm Sanctuary, which provides shelter and advocacy for farmed animals. She developed email campaigns urging readers to lobby elected officials on animal rights bills, hosted fundraisers for animal-friendly politicians and legislators, and donated items from her personal collection to auctions benefiting animal welfare organizations. She co-founded Humane USA-PAC, a national political action committee that promotes animal rights legislators, and helped launch Voters for Animal Rights in New York State.
Jewelry from the Estate of Mary Max comprises lots 394 through 467 in the December 13 Important Jewelry auction.
