HARRIS, W. C. Narrative of an Expedition into Southern Africa, during the years 1836, and 1837...
Bombay: The American Mission Press, 1838. True first edition, H. A. Bryden's copy. Contemporary half black morocco over marbled boards. 8 1/2 x 5 3/8 inches; xviii, 406 pp.; folding map with hand color in outline, 4 lithographed plates (including frontispiece), half-title, list of subscribers. Generally rubbed with some loss to leather, two-inch tear to folding map near mount, minor occasional foxing, ink stamp to rear pastedown, but overall a fresh copy.
A significant association copy of the scarce Bombay edition, with the bookplate and ownership inscription of H. A. Bryden, author of Gun and Camera in South Africa (1893) and several other important works of Africana (see Czech, Africa, pp. 24-25). This Bombay edition not seen by Czech (he cites the London edition of 1839): "Harris' work is valuable as it presents a detailed picture of the South African game fields prior to the growing pressure of civilization. A cornerstone title in the essential African sporting library." Czech, Africa, pp. 118-119.
