Set of Twelve English Sterling Silver Chargers
Gilbert Marks, London, 1897
Each circular, the border embossed with different floral specimens and incised signature and date 1898. Diameter 8 5/8 inches, total approximately 122 ounces.
Gilbert Marks (1861-1905) was widely admired for his works during his short lifetime. Very much a proponent of the Arts & Crafts movement that was revitalizing silver design, Marks was quoted in The Artist in 1898: "I do the designs myself, and never produce a duplicate. No dies or machinery are used and so the artist's fancy is at work upon the subject in hand from the moment when the design is first conceived."
