14 3/4 x 15 1/2 inches (37.5 x 39.5 cm)
This portion of the composition of Raphael's painting shows (lower register, from left) the philosophers Epicurus (wearing a wreath), Boethius (left foreground, leaning forward), Averroes (wearing a turban), and, seated in the foreground and writing in a book, Pythagoras (thought to be a portrait of the architect Donato Bramante). Standing to his right are (possibly) Hypatia and Parmenides. The identificaton of other figures is less certain.
