Lot Details

Lot 23
KNOX, HENRY Document signed
. Boston: 22 February 1805. Note signed "HKnox" promising to pay James Lloyd $4,461.44 by 1 July 1806, countersigned by his son Henry J. Knox and his wife Eliza J. Knox, with further signed notes to verso signed by James Eastburn, attorney to Thomas Norton Longman. Sheet 6 x 7 1/2 inches (15 x 19 cm). Folds, a few spots, offered with a volume relating to Knox's home in Maine.
In his later years, Henry Knox was embroiled in debt and this document promises to pay a large sum to James Lloyd, attorney to the estate of Thomas Longman (d. 1797) and father of Thomas Norton Longman, heir to the estate, mentioned on the verso. Henry Knox died in 1806 and signed items from this late period are uncommon. We locate similar notes on these devastating financial matters in the Gilder Lehrman Collection.
