The painting depicts the dramatic chase on a moonlit night by the British Coast Guard, firing a canon at suspected smugglers in the English Channel. Montague Dawson, the son of a sea captain, served in the Royal Navy in World War I, and was an official war artist in the Second World War, painting encounters by the Royal Navy. Dawson is considered the most important marine artist of his time.
