Best-Selling Author of My Secret Garden and My Mother/My Self
NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle was honored to auction property from the estate of best-selling author Nancy Friday as a featured section of the Doyle at Home auction on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at 10am. Her groundbreaking books, such as My Secret Garden, published in 1973, and My Mother/My Self, published in 1977, explored social identity and gender politics.
Nancy was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1933, and at a young age moved with her mother and sister to Charleston, South Carolina, where she was educated at the prestigious Ashley Hall school for girls. Following graduation from Wellesley College in 1955, she moved to Puerto Rico, where she worked as a travel writer.
In the 1960s she lived in New York working in public relations before moving to London where she wrote a column for Cosmopolitan and began working on My Secret Garden, the first of her best-sellers. For the rest of her life, she was a frequent and popular figure on television and radio in an era when women were carving out new roles for themselves in society and redefining their private lives.
Property from the Estate of Nancy Friday featured a carefully curated collection of furniture, decorations and art from her elegant penthouse duplex overlooking Central Park and the American Museum of Natural History. The collection comprised lots 126-276 and lots 526-530, 532, 533, 538 and 548 in the December 5 sale.
