The noted playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751-1816) had a distinguished career as a member of Parliament from 1780 until 1812. The young man in this painting appears to have stopped into a tavern to post a notice of an upcoming campaign rally for him prior to the election of 1806.

Glue relined. There is a repaired 7-inch-long tear on the floor in the lower left quadrant. Some small repaired tears in the lower right quadrant, near the right edge of the painting. Lines and contours strengthened throughout.
