Noli me Tangere (Christ in the Garden)
Oil on canvas
42 7/8 x 37 inches (109 x 94 cm)

The words Noli me tangere ("Do not touch me" or more accurately "Do not approach me") are a quotation from the Latin Vulgate version of John 20:19. They are the first words uttered by the risen Christ to Mary Magdalene at the moment shown here, when she first recognizes him after the Resurrection. The sentence continues ". . . for I am not yet ascended to my Father; but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father and your Father; and to my God and your God." Whatever their original significance, the words have given rise to a number of interpretations over the centuries regarding the nature of the resurrected Christ and the period between Christ's Resurrection and Ascension.

Estimate: $3,000 - $5,000
